Andrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce
11th Earl of Elgin and 15th Earl of Kincardine,
KT, CD
Born in 1924, the eldest son of the 10th Earl of
Elgin and 14th Earl of Kincardine, Lord Elgin succeeded
to the earldoms in 1968 on the death of his father. He is a direct
descendant of Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots from 1306 until
his death in 1329. While the family connections with Canada do not
go back that far, they do extend to well before Confederation. His
great grandfather, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, was
Governor General of Canada from 1847-1854. Lord Elgin was educated
at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. During the Second World War,
he served as a Lieutenant in the Scots Guards and was wounded. Of
course we here in Elgin County, named for the 8th Earl,
enjoy a special relationship. Since 1970, Lord Elgin has been the
Honorary
Colonel of the 31st Combat Engineer Regiment (The
Elgins) a role held previously by his father. He has been the
Patron of the Elgin Military Museum since it was founded and
visited on a number of occasions. Today, he continues to follow the
progress of the Museum's acquisition of the Cold War Oberon Class
submarine, HMCS Ojibwa.
