The Royal Canadian Navy Centenial

HMS Matabelle

Special Exhibit Details Bellow.

This room is part of a bigger exhibit planned for this year as the Canadian Navy celebrates its 100th Anniversary. This room has a local focus as we highlight the story of St Thomas Bell and UniformH.M.C.S. St.Thomas and the sinking of U- 877. See bellow bellow for more information about expansion of the exhibit and how you can help.

Although many of the crew of the St.Thomas were not from the City there were two city residents aboard during the sinking of U- 877. The main connection that the St.Thomas had to the City for which it was named was through the various service clubs that held raffles and fundraisers for the ship. They eventually raised enough money for the ship to be the first Corvette in the Atlantic to have on board laundry facilities.

For more local stories about the Navy please look at our various sample Navy veterans featured in the Veteran Records menu above. Also for futher information on the Canadian Navy Centennial Celebrations in 2010 please look at their site.

The Museum will continue throughout 2010 to celebrate The Canadian Naval Centenial by expanding the already larger Navy Exhibit to include the specially commissioned 1/72 models of the HMCS St. Thomas and U-877 which will be part of an exhibit of the Sinking of U-877 by the St. Thomas (December 27, 1944). These models are under construction right now, and are valued at approximately $9000 for the St. Thomas alone. Three similar models are already on display at the Naval Museum in Quebec City.
