List of Participants Alive in 1875

In an age when we are not noted for having patience as a virtue, have a thought for the following veterans of the War of 1812-14 who waited over sixty years for the compensation doled out in 1875. Ten years later, only one of these men, George W. Cameron, remained alive to make a claim.

The information comes from the Canadian Home Journal issued Oct. 12, 1875.

"Col. McPherson, accompanied by Col. Moffat of London, reached town by the 10 o'clock train, and immediately proceeded to the Town Hall, where a considerable number of veterans were already assembled.  Mr. Macdougall, M.P., Mr. Casey, M.P., and Dr. Wilson, M.P.P., were present, and assisted in settling the claims.  The following were disposed of:

Is 82 years of age, and resides in Southwold. Served in the Second Norfolk battalion, in Capt. Rapelje's company. Was enrolled in Woodhouse township in 1812, and discharged in March, 1815. Was in the skirmishes at Fort Erie ferry and Malcolm's Mills, and on picket duty two years at Long Point.

Is a resident of Yarmouth, and aged 77 years. Served in Col. Ryerson's Norfolk battalion, in Capt. McCrae's company.  Was enrolled at Simcoe in 1814, and fought at Lundy's Lane. Discharged at Simcoe in 1815.

Resides in Malahide, and is 79 years of age. Served in the first regular Middlesex volunteers under Col. Burwell, in Capt. Secord's company. Was enrolled in Yarmouth in 1812, and discharged on Secord's farm, in that township, in 1815. Was in the fight at Lundy's Lane.

Lives in Yarmouth, and is 80 years of age.  Was enrolled at Niagara in 1812, in Capt. Crook's company, Niagara District battalion, and discharged at the same place in 1815.  Was at the battle of Niagara when the Town was burnt, and at Queenston Heights.

Yarmouth; 85 years of age.  Served under Col. Butler in Capt. Nelles' company; was enrolled at Grimsby in 1812, and discharged the same year at Niagara.  No engagements.

Is a resident of Bayham; age 85 years.  Served under Col. Robert Nelles, in Capt. Henry and Capt. Howe's companies. Enrolled in Gainsboro' in 1812, and not regularly discharged. Was at the night of Cook's Mill in Crowland, and was attached as pilot to the 19th Dragoons.

Lives at Port Bruce and is 104 years of age.  Was enrolled at Prescott in Capt. Sherwood's company, Col. Lethbridge's battalion, and was discharged when the blockhouse was finished on Bridge Island.  Was at the battle of Prescott.  This is the oldest applicant whose claim Col. McPherson has yet considered.  Decision on his claim was reserved.

Resides in Aldborough, and is 80 years of age.  Served in the Lincoln militia under Col. Warren.  Was enrolled at Chippewa in 1812, and discharged at the same place in 1814. Was at the battles of Rysley's Creek, Chippewa and Lundy's Lane. Was wounded in the middle finger.

Lives in St. Thomas, and is 84 years of age.  Served in the 5th battalion, Lincoln militia, Capt. Durand's company.  Enlisted in 1812 and was discharged at Queenston when war closed.  Was at the taking of Detroit, and the battle of Queenston Heights.  Taken prisoner by the Americans while conveying prisoners down the lake to Toronto, and confined at Greenbush, near Albany, but dug his way out and escaped.

McQueen, Col. James
Is a resident of the township of Southwold, and is 81 years of age. Was enrolled in 1812 in the 2nd Norfolk battalion, in Capt. Rapelje's company, and discharged at Port Dover in 1815. Was present at the taking of Detroit in 1812; at the battle of Black Rock in the same year; at the battle of Longwoods in 1814, and took a company of U.S. soldiers prisoners at Chatham; took 18 prisoners at the battle of Nanticoke; on guard at Port Dover with 25 men and fired upon enemy; and finally at Lundy's Lane. Was wounded in the thigh with a marine shot at Black Rock, and also in the wrist with a marine pike. Was promoted from the ranks on the eve of Lundy's Lane, and appointed a number of years ago Lieut.-Col. of the 4th Battalion Elgin Militia. Col. McQueen was of great assistance in settling the claims of the applicants - his memory being very retentive, and his acquaintance with the men pretty wide. Our readers will remember him as the author of some very interesting reminiscences of the war, published in these columns a few months ago.

Mr. Oakes is well known to readers of the JOURNAL as a chronicler of the stirring events of 1812-15, and as the author of many interesting pioneer sketches.
