we direct your attention to a brief description of the experience
of a local veteran Laurence Beavis which is located in our
Veterans Records.
Role of the St. Thomas Times Journal
Searching through the thousands of veteran's files at the museum
looking for items about service in Korea, sometimes reveals some of
the realities of those who waited for them to
return home. Often, the files are faded newspaper clippings or
photocopies of old clippings, lovingly saved and then donated to
the museum. They are not always 'pretty', however, they are worth
their weight in gold because of all the information they
contain. Occassionally, the interest lies not only in the
detail but how that detail differs from our lives and perspectives
today.
The St. Thomas Times Journal and other newspapers play a
significant role in showing us the social customs and niceties of
the day (who's doing what and where and are they anyone we know) as
well as helping to convey the spirit of the times. While the
following two items relate the achievements of a son of Elgin
County in Korea, they also illustrate how much communications and
travel has changed in just fifty years. Who today, thinks
anything of making or receiving a long distance phone call - even
half way around the world? Yet the excitement of this chain of
exchanges comes through loud and clear.
