Trench Warfare

Fighting in World War I in France and Belgium was largely confined to trench warfare. Trenches could be miles in length and construction could vary from a simple ditch to an elaborate system of sand bagged and even concrete emplacements. The display that is pictured above illustrates what trench warfare would have been like by showing a section of typical trench construction.
